EUGENE -- Adidas has invaded Nike's birthplace.
Crews preparing for this particular week's world junior track championships covered the Nike swooshes and pinned Adidas posters alongside the track to the fence, The Register-Guard newspaper reported.
Adidas can take that action in the hometown of Nike due to its sponsorship deal with the International Association of Athletics Federation.
Included in the sponsorship, the German multinational receives a "clean place" at Hayward Field, free of its competitors' logos.
The deal does stop short of throwing a paper bag over the statue of Bill Bowerman, celebrated University of Oregon track coach and the Nike co-founder.
Athletic clothing and shoe companies spend a lot of cash to sponsor sporting events, where fans in the more comprehensive television audience and the stadium see their brands.
"It is a normal branding policy which you see at all major occasions," said Vin Lananna, the former University of Oregon track coach who's now president of TrackTown USA, the local organizing committee.
As lead sponsor of the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials in Eugene in 2008 and 2012, the Nike swoosh ruled supreme at Hayward Field. The competitions of Nike were not even allowed in the Fan Festival region set up near the track's gates.

"This is the birthplace of Nike, correct? I'm sure it does put in his throat," he told the paper.
